Analyzing Diaoyu Islands incident from the perspective of political changes in Japan, we noticed the emergence of Seiji Maehara Phenomenon in Japanese politics.
The Japanese generation born in the postwar period and brought up in an era of rapid economic growth, with Seiji Maehara as a representative, has in common follows the Japanese thinking pattern, therefore it is never wrong to identify them as “Textbook Politicians”. As for them, the so-called politics, whether on domestic or international arena, should be exactly the same as what they learned from the textbook. In case of divergence, textbook should be the one to follow instead of the reality. Such notion is most supported by the Democratic Party. Since its administration from last September, the Democratic Party has been following the same logic in addressing any domestic or foreign issue, stuck in the vicious circle of “mess around and then mess up”. Policies in relation to child allowance and relocation of Futenma US marine base both follow the exact same logic.
The emergence of Seiji Maehara Phenomenon raises our concerns as there’s a growing number of Japanese politicians who share the same thinking pattern as Seiji Maehara, calling for China’s change of diplomatic gestures against Japan.
