On November 4, the United States and New Zealand signed “Wellington Declaration” to establish a strategic partnership between the countries, marking a new page in the history of U.S.-New Zealand relations hampered by New Zealand’s “nuclear free” policy 25 years ago, and U.S.’s resolution back to the long-separated South Pacific Region as well.
Restructuring its strategic planning towards Asia-Pacific with primary focus on East Asia, U.S. is striving to achieve power balance in the region backed by strengthened connections with allies against the rise of China.
Though China doesn’t touch much upon military security in the South Pacific region, U.S. takes precautions against the rising power in view of PRC’s accelerating influence in the region. Therefore, U.S.’s return to the South Pacific region could well be considered as a result of big power confrontation.
